Starting a New Business
Starting a new business is exciting & stressful without having to think about your energy! In the utility industry if you don't sign a new gas or electricity contract when you start a new business you will be on a 'Out of Contract' or 'Deemed Rate', which are extremely costly, normally 40 - 60% more per annum than being a contract. By not finding a supplier could be a very costly expense!
If you move into an empty property, the electricity may not have been disconnected, if it hasn't, then some one still needs to pay for it!
Here is an easy guide to follow to ensure you're not stuck with a supplier/deal you don't want.
1. Agree a cut off point
When you sign a lease or buy a property, ALWAYS find out if the utility bills are included & read the electricity & gas metres. Write the metre reads down, togther with the date.
2. Dealing with Telesales
As a new business, you are bound to deal with various telesales agencies using scare tactics & always promising a great deal! The current one is the caller says they are merely a Metre Registration Organisation, but actually, they are trying to sell you energy. They tell you your electricity &/or Gas is not registered & may be disconnected!
DO NOT agree to anything, unless you have it in writing!
It is a high probability that by agreeing to anything over the phone you'll be committing yourself to anything up to a 5-year contract, which are normally expensive rates. Many people do not realise that a verbal contract is legal in business law. The best way to deal with these 'cold calls' is to inform them that you have a broker, who already deals with all of your utilities/contracts & you have already agreed to a contract.
